Pool Leak or Evaporation? How to Tell the Difference

It’s normal for swimming pools to lose some water through evaporation, especially during hot, dry weather. But how do you know if your pool is simply evaporating water or if you have a pool leak that requires professional attention? Knowing the difference can help you avoid unnecessary water loss and expensive repairs.

Pool Leak or Evaporation? How to Tell the Difference

Most pools lose anywhere from 1/8- to 1/4-inch of water on a daily basis due to evaporation. Factors like high temperatures, low humidity, wind, and frequent pool use can all increase normal water loss. However, if you add water to your pool every few days or notice the water level dropping more than expected, a pool leak could be the cause.

One simple way to check is by performing what’s known as the bucket test. Fill up a bucket with pool water and then put it on your pool step, so the water inside of the bucket is the same as the pool’s water level. Mark both water levels and wait 24 hours without using the pool. If the water drops significantly more than the water inside of the bucket, you could have a leak.

Other warning signs that you have a pool leak include soggy areas around the pool, cracks in the pool shell or deck, air bubbles in the return lines, or unusually high water and chemical bills. These systems may indicate water is escaping somewhere within the pool or its plumbing system.
